West Ham United sign Canada international Doneil Henry from Cypriot side Apollon Limassol for an undisclosed fee

Doneil Henry has won 14 international caps for Canada so far
21-year-old has spent two previous periods training with West Ham
Defender goes straight into Sam Allardyce's first-team squad

West Ham have completed their first signing of the January transfer window with the capture of Canada international Doneil Henry.

The Hammers announced the transfer of the 21-year-old defender via their official club website on Saturday.

Henry, who has 14 caps for his country, joins on a long-term contract from Cypriot First Division club Apollon Limassol for an undisclosed fee.

The 6'2 defender has been closely monitored by the Irons for a while after having already spent two periods training with the club in recent months.

Henry was brought to Upton Park boss Sam Allardyce's attention by Toronto FC head coach Ryan Nelsen.

Former defender Nelsen, who played under Allardyce at Blackburn Rovers, recommended the talented Henry after having seen him become the first player to graduate from the MLS side's academy.

'Ryan (Nelsen) was my captain at Blackburn for a couple of years and he rang us and told us about Doneil,' Allardyce told West Ham's official website.

'He said this lad definitely has Premier League potential and he has everything he needs.

'With a little coaching from us and work in terms of how to defend in the Premier League, Ryan says he has all the attributes to be a good player.

'We have invested in him for the near future, so we do hope he can make some sort of appearance this season if he settles in and does as well as Ryan thinks he will. If not, we hope he is certainly one for the future.'

Henry, who goes straight into the Hammers' first-team squad, is hoping to settle in quickly at his new club.

'It feels good to be given the opportunity to come and train and see what it's like to be part of a Premier League team and I just want to get started and get into the team real soon,' he said.

'I had a really good relationship with Ryan Nelsen and I always wanted to see what it was like to play at another level, the highest level, and I got the opportunity to come over here. Since then, I was just hoping to come back and now it's happened, I want it to continue on and keep playing.

'I started with the Toronto FC Academy when I was 16 and signed for the first-team when I was 17 and now I just want to continue to develop and keep growing as a player. I'm 21 and I want to get a role with the team, keep my head down and take my opportunity when I can.

'I love a tackle and I just want to defend hard. I take pride in my clean sheets with the back line and with the 'keeper, so if we can just do that, it's job completed.'

Reports: West Ham plan 'massive deal', offer world class striker unlikely return

West Ham are reportedly eyeing an ambitious move to bring Carlos Tevez back to Upton Park.

Olly Dawes

Call it controversial, call it heroic - but no matter what, you have to admit that Carlos Tevez's time with West Ham United was eventful.

The Argentine arrived in the hugely contested transfer from Corinthians back in 2006, and whilst he took some time to get going at Upton Park, he evolved into a hero as the Hammers avoided relegation on the final day at Manchester United.

Tevez hit seven goals in the final few months of season to keep West Ham in the top flight, including the goal at Old Trafford to beat Sir Alex Ferguson's men 1-0 before signing with the Red Devils himself.

Even after spells with United and Manchester City, Tevez is still a fan favourite at West Ham, and admitted he still loves the club when he played for Argentina against Croatia at Upton Park back in November.

"I'm very, very thankful for everything, I'm number one West Ham fan forever, because of the way they welcomed me, the love they showed me and everything," said Tevez.

"It was my first time in Europe and they made me who I am today. I will always be very thankful to West Ham fans and I'll be West Ham's number one fan," he added.

The most recent development with the Juventus striker is that he won't sign a new contract with the Turin giants, and could look to leave the club in the summer - and bizarrely, West Ham are being linked with a move to bring him back to East London!

According to the Daily Mail, West Ham want to make a big splash signing with their last season at Upton Park and upcoming move to the Olympic Stadium, and bringing Tevez back to the club is seen as the perfect move.

That seems incredibly unlikely given the huge wages Tevez would demand, and it would surely require West Ham to at least get a top six finish this season, which is also far from assured despite a superb first half of the campaign.

It would be an emotional and remarkable return for Tevez, but treat this rumour with a large pinch of salt.

Irons won’t budge as 14 clubs wait in wings

West Ham are in no rush to push through the Mauro Zarate loan deal to Queens Park Rangers.

Harry Redknapp and the club are understood to be trying to get a cut price arrangement and the Irons are having none of it.

With 14 other clubs interested, including Newcastle, Sunderland, Torino, Valencia and others as far afield as Mexico, the Hammers have no need to lower the loan terms

Reknapp remains keen on the player but a Hammers source told ClaretandHugh: “Things should become a lot clearer on the Rangers thing this week but we are certainly not short on other options.

“And despite the public fall-out between Mauro and the manager, with Diafra Sakho injured there’s no need for us to be rushing a deal through for the sake of it.

“We all understand how frustrated Mauro feels at the moment but the deal has to suit all parties when it gets donme.

“And with that amount of interest out there, it’s pretty obvious that this is a very decent player we are talking about regardless of what may or may not have been said.

“There’s certainly no way we’ll be held to ransom by QPR. They know the terms if they want the him.”
